How to fall in love with a console using an emulator

You know, it’s funny that my favorite console of the 16-bit era was the one that I never held in my hands.

Preface

Probably my story of meeting Dendy will not be distinguished by any originality, but I clearly remember how in the early 00s a whole bunch of emulators appeared on our computer. We did not use the local network due to the lack of PCs from our neighbors, and all the delights of hourly Internet appeared a little later. For new products, the elder brother went to friends with hard drive (I don’t know anything, the only correct name for the early 2000s) and downloaded everything that could be of any value to a young mind. It was during one of these campaigns that we got our treasured emulators.

First acquaintance

I remember my brother’s explanation of how to use it Nestopia And Gens, I remember this huge selection of roms and that now all Dendev and Sega games can be completed and saved at any time. Darkwing Duck, Battletoads & Double Dragon, Adventure Island and other games for which you lacked the skills no longer seem so difficult and most importantly, now you can get to know the games better SEGA.

But there was one emulator with which we could not find a common language – ZSNES. After studying the meager collection of games that lay in the folder with roms, a small selection was highlighted, headed by Batman Return And Donkey Kong. But they couldn’t capture the child’s mind in the right way – how the hell could a jumping gorilla interest you seriously and for a long time when they were waiting for you next door? Comix Zone, Zero Tolerance and all parts of the supersonic hedgehog from SEGA? What could be of interest to a bunch of incomprehensible games in Japanese and English, where most of them are in an isometric perspective?. Sorry, how am I supposed to figure this out?? In general, our acquaintance was not the most successful.

In our childhood on the dandy, Mario did not receive due attention and, indeed, how could a mustachioed plumber compare with the tanks that demolished an entire level to the base?

A lot of time https://grand-ivy-casino.co.uk/login/ has passed since then. I became the owner of a PC for many years, but emulators remained an opportunity to do nothing more than lament about carefree times. Of course, in the background there were always consoles from PlayStation – a computer club located in the basement of the school, gaming magazines were full of reviews of God of war, ICO and Metal Gear Solid 3, and the desire to plunge back into the world of console gaming has not gone away.

A choice that turned out to be wider than initially thought

When I decided to buy a home gaming console, my favorite was PlayStation 3, but in order to completely dispel all doubts, I decided to find out more about what its competitors are like Xbox 360 And Nintendo Wii. At this moment, it was time for me to make discoveries that I didn’t even suspect about.

It turns out that the prefix from Microsoft has a more convenient gamepad compared to dual shock 3; it turns out that this green box has a bunch of great exclusives in a variety of genres, including handy RTS on the console; it turns out that the multiplatform overall looks better due to its simpler architecture. But behind all this there was no sense of any background, there was nothing that could hook and tip the scales in one’s favor. Although perhaps this is all just duckling syndrome and love for the brand PlayStation, has been going on since childhood, but that’s not about it now.

What could she offer at that time? Nintendo Wii? In general, nothing that could interest not the richest student: Wiimote I wasn’t impressed, the graphics seemed very outdated, and in Russia it was very difficult to get the console itself. It was hard to believe that someone was buying it of their own free will, and even harder to believe that at that time Wii was one of the best-selling consoles in history. The games of the internal studios were sold in some unreal quantities, and the whole world was a fan of the duology Super Mario Galaxy.

A reasonable question that was spinning in my head can be formulated something like this: why the Nintendo phenomenon took us on a tangent and why we know so little about the games that are loved all over the world?

Looking for an answer

Probably the most obvious thing would be to describe the conditions in which we played in the 90s. Instead of the original NES Chinese clone Dendy, Of the 16-bit consoles, one could only find Mega Drive, which was also successfully cloned in China and which cost significantly less than the original Super Nintendo. By the end of the 90s when PS One became more accessible and buying a pirated disc on some market was not a big problem. I don’t know how many gamers in Russia were able to evaluate the revolutionary virtual camera in Super Mario 64, enjoy the wonderful Ocarina of Time with all the intricacies of the plot or see how first-person shooters on consoles should look correctly GoldenEye 007, but about the ubiquity of consoles Nintendo there was no need to say exactly. Quick hack PlayStation 2 increased this gap many times over and contributed to limiting the information bubble between PC And PS2, until the advent of the seventh generation of consoles.

Further immersion in history opened our eyes to a crazy confrontation SEGA And Nintendo in the 90s. Starting from appearance Sonic as a competitor Mario and before the famous advertisement GENESIS DOES WHAT NINTENDON’T. Most importantly, I learned more about myself Super Nintendo and her games.

My selection did not include games from the Mario series, Yoshi’s Island, Metroid and many others. If they were all together, perhaps my acquaintance with the console would have turned out a little differently.

Second chance

Still came to the rescue ZSNES, only with a more conscious approach to use and to say that I was delighted would be an understatement. I rediscovered platformers Mario, plunged into amazing Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (about which criminally little material has been written!) And The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, series Mega Man and oppressive Super Metroid, crazy about the graphics Star Fox and understanding what hardware it runs on. I found out that all those weird isometric games in Japanese turned out to be great Final Fantasy And Chrono Trigger and the list goes on for a long time.

I truly fell in love with this console. Mega Drive without a doubt, a wonderful console with its great games, but it couldn’t keep me engaged for a long time, unlike the creation of a great N. When it was announced in 2017 SNES Mini I already knew for sure that it would end up in my collection.

So, it seems like a little adventure for 20 minutes learn a little more about PlayStation 3 competitors turned into a love for the console that I never had and the era of games that passed me by.
